How to Store Your Wig Safely to Keep It Looking Great

Wigs are an investment — in your style, your confidence, and your convenience. But even the best-quality wig can lose its shape, texture, or shine if it's not stored properly.

Whether you wear your wig every day or only occasionally, how you store it matters. Good storage helps maintain the shape, prevent tangling, and extend its lifespan. Here’s how to do it right.

1. Always Detangle Before Storing

Before putting your wig away, gently comb or brush it with a wide-tooth comb or wig brush, starting at the ends and working your way up. This prevents knots from setting in while the wig is resting.

For curly or wavy styles, use your fingers or a pick rather than a brush to maintain the curl pattern.

Never store your wig while it is tangled - those tangles will cause damage and more tangles.

2. Store It Clean — or At Least Dry

If you’ve worn the wig all day, especially in warm weather or near cooking smells, it’s best to give it a light clean or at least air it out before storing.

Never store a wig while it's damp — moisture can lead to fiber damage over time.

3. Choose the Right Storage Option

✔️ For Daily Wear:
Use a wig stand or mannequin head to help the wig retain its shape. Keep it in a cool, dry, and shaded spot — away from direct sunlight or heat sources.

✔️ For Occasional Use or Travel:
Use the original wig box or bag or a satin/silk bag. Fold the wig in half from ear to ear with the hair tucked inside and gently lay it in the box. You can stuff the cap with tissue paper to help it keep its shape.

4. Keep It Covered

If you’re storing it on a stand, cover your wig to protect it from dust and airborne oils. A light scarf, hairnet, or breathable cover works well.

Avoid using normal plastic bags to store it in — they can trap moisture and cause frizz or mustiness over time. The bags we use are specially designed for wig storage - it is well worth keeping that and the wig net to store your wig in - it will help maintain the wig’s quality and stop tangles.

5. Mind the Environment

  • Avoid humidity – A dry room is ideal.
  • Avoid sunlight – UV light can fade both synthetic and human hair wigs.
  • Avoid heat – Don’t store near heating vents or in hot attics/lofts.
  • Avoid pets – Cat hair and synthetic wigs do not mix!

Quick Checklist Before Storing:

  • ✅ Gently detangled?
  • ✅ Fully dry?
  • ✅ Stored on a stand or folded in a box/bag?
  • ✅ Protected from dust, heat, and light?

Final Thoughts

A little care goes a long way. Storing your wig properly not only keeps it looking fresh — it can also help your favorite styles last months longer.

If you're in a rush, even placing your wig gently on a shelf is better than stuffing it into a drawer. But when possible, take a few minutes to detangle, dry, and store it with love.

Your wig will thank you — with good looks that last.
